My Approach

I believe that everybody has the innate ability to grow and evolve, but we don’t always feel we are able to create impactful and sustainable changes on our own. As a client-centered therapist, I focus on meeting you, the client, just as you are, and attuning to your specific needs and goals. I view the therapeutic relationship as collaborative, and like to imagine that we are walking in tandem, as I accompany and support you on your journey of self-discovery and healing. My approach to therapy is multidisciplinary:

Psychodynamics: I believe there is a connection between your present and your past. In addition to asking specifics about your personal history, I might also ask you, “what does this remind you of?” or “when in your life have you felt this way before?” so we can untangle the roots of your reactions. At your pace, I will help you explore and make meaning of your early life experiences, while holding at the forefront systemic and cultural context.

Relational: I bring my authentic self into the session and view our relationship as the foundation of our work. I prioritize building trust, providing safety, and offering choice in the space, and use our dynamic as a way to understand and work through your interpersonal experiences outside of therapy. I might ask you “how does it feel to talk about this with me?” or “How did it feel to hear me say that?” to bring focus to the present moment and feelings that arise in session between us.

Somatic: I will encourage and guide you to contact and deepen into your somatic experiences, which means noticing and feeling your body’s sensations. I might ask “Where do you feel that in your body?” or “How can you tell you’re feeling ___?” In order to understand ourselves and regulate our big emotions, we must first be able to recognize how it is we’re experiencing our feelings, instead of just what it is we are feeling.

As a therapist I am direct, creative, authentic, and sometimes playful! (Don’t be surprised if we laugh together sometimes.) I attune to the individual needs of each client and what they bring in to each session, so no two sessions feel exactly the same, because our needs are constantly changing. While our sessions will be grounded in “talk therapy,” I also incorporate visual art, movement, meditations, and games to creatively expand the therapeutic work.
